La carrière cahotique des Isley Brothers sur plusieurs labels (RCA, Tamla Motown, Atlantic, Buddah, etc) a donné lieu à un nombre incalculable de compilations réalisées au gré des titres disponibles et de l'implication du compilateur. La parution en 1999 du coffret It's Your Thing: The Story of the Isley Brothers était donc une aubaine pour les amateurs du groupe et toute personne souhaitant appréhender ses trente années d'activité.
Divisé en 3 CD, ce qui paraît encore peu par rapport à la taille du répertoire, la compilation ultra chic bénéficiant d'un livret détaillé de première main et d'un packaging soigné, englobe l'histoire des Isleys depuis les débuts doo-woop et rock'n'roll (« Shout! ») jusqu'aux titres R&B et G-funk (« Take Me To The Next Phase », « Don't Say Goodnight ») en passant par les bombes soul (« Testify » avec Jimmy James, futur Jimi Hendrix), la grande période funk symbolisée par « It's Your Thing » ou « Keep On Doin' » et les ballades imparables (« That Lady »), comptant parmi les sommets du genre.
Evidemment, cette compilation omet quelques titres rares recherchés par les collectionneurs et ne suit pas une chronologie exacte. Il n'en demeure pas moins qu'elle propose le meilleur tracklisting possible (incluant « Twist And Shout », absent de nombreuses anthologies) et donne l'aperçu global le plus satisfaisant de l'une des formations les plus essentielles de l'histoire de la soul. Et certainement des plus mésestimées.

Chronique
La carrière cahotique des Isley Brothers sur plusieurs labels (RCA, Tamla Motown, Atlantic, Buddah, etc) a donné lieu à un nombre incalculable de compilations réalisées au gré des titres disponibles et de l'implication du compilateur. La parution en 1999 du coffret It's Your Thing: The Story of the Isley Brothers était donc une aubaine pour les amateurs du groupe et toute personne souhaitant appréhender ses trente années d'activité.
Divisé en 3 CD, ce qui paraît encore peu par rapport à la taille du répertoire, la compilation ultra chic bénéficiant d'un livret détaillé de première main et d'un packaging soigné, englobe l'histoire des Isleys depuis les débuts doo-woop et rock'n'roll (« Shout! ») jusqu'aux titres R&B et G-funk (« Take Me To The Next Phase », « Don't Say Goodnight ») en passant par les bombes soul (« Testify » avec Jimmy James, futur Jimi Hendrix), la grande période funk symbolisée par « It's Your Thing » ou « Keep On Doin' » et les ballades imparables (« That Lady »), comptant parmi les sommets du genre.
Evidemment, cette compilation omet quelques titres rares recherchés par les collectionneurs et ne suit pas une chronologie exacte. Il n'en demeure pas moins qu'elle propose le meilleur tracklisting possible (incluant « Twist And Shout », absent de nombreuses anthologies) et donne l'aperçu global le plus satisfaisant de l'une des formations les plus essentielles de l'histoire de la soul. Et certainement des plus mésestimées.
