« Personne ne sait tout faire, badiner et bouleverser, provoquer le rire et la profonde émotion, et tout cela en même temps, comme Joseph Haydn… » disait Mozart de son ami. La Création, en est un exemple. Haydn consacra beaucoup de temps à sa composition — un an et demi de travail —, demandant à Dieu de lui donner la force nécessaire pour la mener à bien. Il y parviendra mais au prix d'un total épuisement — sa force vitale en ressortira minée durant de longs mois —, expliquant que s’il s’y était autant donné, c’est parce qu’"il savait qu'elle durerait longtemps". Dirigée par Haydn lui-même lors de la première publique le 17 mars 1799 à l'ancien Burgtheater de Vienne, l'œuvre eut un succès retentissant. D'aucuns considèrent aujourd’hui cet acte de sa foi religieuse comme son plus grand chef-d'œuvre.
Version de référence, cet enregistrement légendaire de 1969, capté à la Jesus-Christus-Kirche de Berlin durant les répétitions pour les concerts prévus à la Philharmonie de Berlin, réunit bien des atouts. D'abord un Wiener Singverein souverain soutenu par le souffle inspiré et grandiose de Karajan, qui irradie également sur tous les pupitres du Philharmonique de Berlin où s'élèvent des vents particulièrement sublimes. Ensuite, mais au même niveau, le nec plus ultra côté solistes dont l'homogénéité rare du quatuor est autant à signaler que la remarquable qualité vocale individuelle : Gundula Janowitz, Christa Ludwig, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Walter Berry, et aussi Fritz Wunderlich... Alors que l’enregistrement est presque achevé, il est brutalement interrompu le 17 septembre 1966 par la mort accidentelle du ténor de 35 ans (une chute dans un escalier chez un ami). Les séances d’enregistrement reprendront en 1968 et 1969 avec le jeune ténor Werner Krenn qui remplacera Fritz Wunderlich essentiellement pour les récitatifs. (© Qobuz / GG)

« Personne ne sait tout faire, badiner et bouleverser, provoquer le rire et la profonde émotion, et tout cela en même temps, comme Joseph Haydn… » disait Mozart de son ami. La Création, en est un exemple. Haydn consacra beaucoup de temps à sa composition — un an et demi de travail —, demandant à Dieu de lui donner la force nécessaire pour la mener à bien. Il y parviendra mais au prix d'un total épuisement — sa force vitale en ressortira minée durant de longs mois —, expliquant que s’il s’y était autant donné, c’est parce qu’"il savait qu'elle durerait longtemps". Dirigée par Haydn lui-même lors de la première publique le 17 mars 1799 à l'ancien Burgtheater de Vienne, l'œuvre eut un succès retentissant. D'aucuns considèrent aujourd’hui cet acte de sa foi religieuse comme son plus grand chef-d'œuvre.
Version de référence, cet enregistrement légendaire de 1969, capté à la Jesus-Christus-Kirche de Berlin durant les répétitions pour les concerts prévus à la Philharmonie de Berlin, réunit bien des atouts. D'abord un Wiener Singverein souverain soutenu par le souffle inspiré et grandiose de Karajan, qui irradie également sur tous les pupitres du Philharmonique de Berlin où s'élèvent des vents particulièrement sublimes. Ensuite, mais au même niveau, le nec plus ultra côté solistes dont l'homogénéité rare du quatuor est autant à signaler que la remarquable qualité vocale individuelle : Gundula Janowitz, Christa Ludwig, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Walter Berry, et aussi Fritz Wunderlich... Alors que l’enregistrement est presque achevé, il est brutalement interrompu le 17 septembre 1966 par la mort accidentelle du ténor de 35 ans (une chute dans un escalier chez un ami). Les séances d’enregistrement reprendront en 1968 et 1969 avec le jeune ténor Werner Krenn qui remplacera Fritz Wunderlich essentiellement pour les récitatifs. (© Qobuz / GG)
