En 2003, les Snow Patrol, Gary Lightbody en tête, sortent d’une période morose et d’une éjection de leur ancien label, Jeepster Records. Après quelques remaniements du point de vue de ses membres, le groupe signe chez Polydor.
La maison de disques croit aux possibilités fédératrices d’un groupe de rock britannique comme Snow Patrol, surtout depuis le succès massif de Coldplay. Et si Snow Patrol faisait son propre Parachutes ? Après des années d’efforts, Snow Patrol accède enfin au succès tant espéré : grâce à Final Straw, et grâce au talent de Garret « Jacknife » Lee. À l’époque, celui-ci débute seulement dans sa carrière de producteur qui fera plus tard bénéficier U2, R.E.M. ou Bloc Party de son flair.
Garret Lee a en effet le don de rendre plus accessible les musiques sur lesquelles ils travaillent sans enlever à leur crédibilité – tâche ô combien délicate. Tournant le dos aux orientations mélancolico-électro-rock de leurs deux premiers albums, la nouvelle équipe signe ici quatorze chansons accrocheuses. Porté par son excellent « Run », qui sera le tube de la consécration, Final Straw est un savant mélange dosé au gramme près de rock (« Wow », « Tiny Little Fractures »), de pop basique (« Chocolate », « Same ») et de ballade romantique (« Grazed Knes »).
Le tout est sympathique, agréable… mais a totalement oublié la recherche d’originalité des débuts du groupe.
