Continuing his series of period re-creations of great choral music, Paul McCreesh presents an authentic version of Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah, imagined as it might have sounded in 1846. Previously, McCreesh has interpreted Berlioz's Grand Messe des Morts, Howell's Requiem, and the music of Gabrieli in A New Venetian Coronation 1595, and this recording of Elijah is a continuation of his project to put these masterworks in a historical context, not merely to imitate the instrumentation and techniques of the past. In this instance, McCreesh follows his research into the August 1846 performance of Elijah in Birmingham Town Hall, as well as what is known of the April 1847 performance in London's Exeter Hall, employing a large orchestra and a massive choir of approximately 300 voices. The Wroclaw Philharmonic Choir and the Gabrieli Consort join forces here, as they did earlier in the Berlioz recording, and the combined choirs are augmented by the Gabrieli Young Singers Scheme and multiple vocal soloists to make this recording equally impressive in richness and presence. The oratorio is presented on two CDs, which are packaged in a sturdy hardcover book with thorough liner notes, and the sound of the recording is big and spacious, with a roomy acoustic that gives the ensemble a sound that seems bigger than life.

The Wroclaw Philharmonic Choir and the Gabrieli Consort join forces here, as they did earlier in the Berlioz recording, and the combined choirs are augmented by the Gabrieli Young Singers Scheme and multiple vocal soloists to make this recording equally impressive in richness and presence. The oratorio is presented on two CDs, which are packaged in a sturdy hardcover book with thorough liner notes, and the sound of the recording is big and spacious, with a roomy acoustic that gives the ensemble a sound that seems bigger than life.
