Si le nom d’Eric Clapton orne le haut de cette pochette, c’est bien le visage de J.J. Cale qui en occupe toute la surface. Cet Eric Clapton & Friends: The Breeze, An Appreciation Of J.J. Cale ne cache donc pas son jeu et God rend ici hommage à l’une de ses idoles, J.J. Cale… Cale était un style à lui seul. Une sensation. Douceur, tranquillité, pas d’affolement lorsqu’il s’agit d’évoquer la musique de ce songwriter originaire d’Oklahoma City qui joua tout d’abord avec Leon Russell puis Delaney & Bonnie, avant de composer, en 1965, After Midnight qui n'attira l'attention que lorsqu’il fut repris, en 1970, par un certain… Eric Clapton ! Celui-ci chantera d’ailleurs d’autres perles de J.J. Cale, comme Cocaine… En 1972, Cale enregistre enfin son premier album, Naturally, point de départ d’une discographie à cheval sur la country, le blues, le rock et la soul, un univers laid back, décontracté… Eric Clapton & Friends: The Breeze, An Appreciation Of J.J. Cale fête donc le premier anniversaire de la disparition de ce bluesman à part, emporté par une crise cardiaque à 74 ans. Les seize reprises des compositions de J.J. Cale sont signées par un impressionnant casting incluant notamment Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Derek Trucks, Albert Lee, David Lindley, Christine Lakeland, Greg Leisz, Jim Keltner et bien entendu Clapton.
