Leonie Rysanek is one of the outstanding sopranos of the post-World War II era. Although she began her long career as a lyric soprano, she soon came to the realization that her strong suit was the meaty dramatic soprano roles where her dramatic temperament would hold her in good stead. In the final phase of her career, however, she began losing the high soprano component and added mezzo-soprano character roles to her repertoire. In her prime she was known for her exciting upper register. These performances of arias by Beethoven, Weber, Wagner, Verdi, Puccini, Richard Strauss, and d'Albert, all with orchestral accompaniment, were captured from 1950 to 1955 during the first years of her eminent career, which began in 1949 in Innsbruck, and are fine examples demonstrating not only her rich, opulent voice, but also her wide repertoire even at that early stage of her career. Many of the roles containing these arias became her signature roles. Some of these performances are from live concerts and some are transfers from Electrola or Columbia recordings, but all are monaural recordings. Because the shortcoming of this disc is the sound, primary value of this disc is as a document of the early singing accomplishments of Rysanek. The enclosed booklet contains nothing more than a brief but interesting biography, in both German and English.
