Le terme « Division-Musick » est utilisé au 17e siècle pour décrire un style improvisatoire de diminution typiquement anglais. Les musiciens utilisent de courtes mélodies de basse appelées grounds comme base pour des diminutions complexes et virtuoses : commençant avec des mélodies simples et lentes sur une mélodie de basse, elles s’achèvent dans des diminutions très rapides et virtuoses après un nombre variable de répétitions de la mélodie. Les chanteurs comme les instrumentistes pratiquent cet art de la diminution, mais l’instrument préféré pour les diminutions est à l’époque la division viol. Cet enregistrement a pour but de donner un aperçu de la virtuosité anglaise durant la période baroque.
