Difficult Grace is a multimedia work that cellist Seth Parker Woods has been performing since 2020, presumably refining it along the way. It works perfectly well as an audio recording, however, and in this form, released in 2023, it garnered a pair of Grammy nominations for Best Classical Instrumental Solo and Producer of the Year for Elaine Martone. Parker Woods calls the album semi-autobiographical, rooted in the experience of ancestors during the Great Migration, and indeed, it is suffused with African American subject matter and modes of expression, including in the spoken texts of many of the pieces. Consider The Race: 1915 by Nathalie Joachim, setting texts from the Chicago Defender in that year. Yet Parker Woods' reach is wide, and it is hard to think of another contemporary album that encompasses such a range of ambitions. Not all the composers are of African descent, and while the music mostly has a strong rhythmic aspect, it tends to borrow only indirectly from the jazz and gospel with which Parker Woods grew up. There isn't a dull piece of the program, but perhaps the most fascinating is the five-part cycle at the end by Ted Hearne, setting texts by the poet Kemi Alabi. The interplay between Parker Woods' cello and the text is certainly influenced by hip-hop production, but their complexity comes from the concert music sphere. This recording rewards multiple hearings, and it comes with superior graphic design (not to mention useful content) of a sort that is rare enough in contemporary music releases. It confirms Parker Woods as a major rising star in contemporary music.
