Baby It’s Me n’est ni un sommet de la discographie de Diana Ross, ni le disque qui lui rapporta le plus de royalties… Pourtant, cet album qui parut en septembre 1977 possède, avec le recul, un vrai cachet. L’ancienne Supremes est alors au sommet de sa gloire et de la célébrité et elle semble alors vouloir s’extraire, au fil des albums, du terrain purement soul pour aller vers des arrangements plus sophistiqués et plus pop. A l’époque, les puristes s’arrachèrent évidemment les cheveux, se demandant où était passée l’âme de la déesse de chez Motown. Mais la patine du temps joue en faveur de ce Baby It’s Me qui, bien que très pop, est d’une redoutable efficacité groovy. Surtout que la dame s’est entourée ici d’une armée de requins de studio des plus redoutables parmi lesquels Steve Lukather, James Newton Howard, Tom Scott, Bud Shank, Lenny Castro, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Ira Newborn, David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, Ray Parker, Jr. ou bien encore Lee Ritenour.
