Dès les années cinquante, Johnny Cash (soutenu en cela par son épouse June Carter) s’est soucié des conditions de détention faites aux prisonniers américains, et a ouvertement milité pour une amélioration du sort des repris de justice. Tout aussi tôt dans sa carrière, il a pris l’habitude de se produire dans des prisons. Artistiquement, le résultat est sans contestation possible l’enregistrement de deux de ses plus beaux albums.



At Folsom Prison en est le premier, et un disque exceptionnel. Au côté de quelques hits en parcours obligé (« Jackson », « I Still Miss Someone » - ode à la muse June – et, assez logiquement, « Folsom Prison Blues »), le chanteur a choisi son répertoire le plus sombre : chansons de violence, de mort, d’addiction (avec « Cocaine Blues », Cash sait vraiment de quoi il parle), et de crime, mais également de rédemption (« Long Black Veil »). Surtout, on ne peut qu’être ému de constater avec quel naturel l’homme de l’Arkansas se produit devant l’une des plus difficiles audiences qui soit : nulle démagogie, ni provocation, mais simplement un cœur d’homme qui bat. La Carter Family est là au grand complet (ainsi que le guitariste Al Casey) pour soutenir Cash dans l’exercice, et cela donne quitus de la qualité de l’ensemble.



At Folsom Prison a bénéficié d’une réédition, restaurant l’intégralité du concert (avec trois chansons supplémentaires). Exploité en 45 tours, « Folsom Prison Blues » atteignit la première place des classements country. Quant à l’album (également triomphant dans les charts country, et treizième de la catégorie pop en 1968), il obtint la même année le Grammy Award de la meilleure performance country masculine.
