Gregorio Allegri was one of the few composers of the 17th century known to general audiences a century ago, and it was for a piece only slightly related to what he originally wrote. The history of the Miserere is nicely summarized in the booklet to this release by the Choir of King's College London; essentially it is the product of two centuries of secret improvisation by papal choirs, finally written down in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The first person to do so was the young Mozart. The Miserere, which has some spectacular soprano high Cs at the end, is an odd hybrid of Counter Reformation a cappella choral style and later kitsch, and it's beautifully performed here. In general the choir under David Trendell's direction is very strong throughout. Trendell doesn't try to force his youthful choristers (men and women) into a cathedral style but gives free rein to the men, especially, who respond with a splendid, full-throated sound that's entirely appropriate to this repertory. The chief attraction is the presence of Allegri mass settings, both of them world premieres. Both are based on preexisting motets, one by Allegri himself and one by Pierre Bonhomme. The booklet likens them to Palestrina's style, and surely Allegri was part of the general Counter Reformation movement, but these works of the early 17th century came from one or two generations after Palestrina's heyday. Conservative though they are, the use of block harmonies and the occasional dashes of harmonic color testify to a Counter Reformation that had experienced the new breezes coming from Venice. A worthwhile release both for lovers of the ever-popular Miserere and for those seriously interested in the Roman Counter Reformation as it developed in the 17th century.
