Van Baerle Trio
The Netherlands' Van Baerle Trio has established a strong record as one of Europe's rising chamber music ensembles. The group was founded by violinist Maria Milstein, cellist Gideon den Herder, and pianist Hannes Minnaar in 2004, and the membership was unchanged as of the late 2010s. The name came from Amsterdam's Van Baerle Street, where the three musicians met. The street is located near the Amsterdam Conservatory, where all three were students, and lies near the Concertgebouw concert hall, where they have played many times; they continue to be based in Amsterdam. Teachers Dmitri Ferschtman, Ferenc Rados, and Claus-Christian Schuster encouraged the young group, and a formative experience was a 2008 meeting and subsequent teaching sessions with the aged but vigorous Israeli pianist Menahem Pressler, formerly of the Beaux Arts Trio. After this, the group's profile became higher. Nominated by the Concertgebouw Organization as ECHO Rising Stars for the 2013-2014 season, they played concerts at the Philharmonie in Cologne, L'Audiotori in Barcelona, the Musikverein in Vienna, the London Barbican, and Cité de la Musique in Paris. They also won a top prize at the ARD International Music Competition in 2013. Since then, they have toured widely in Europe, performing on television and radio as well as in concert halls. They have appeared at the Rheingau and Bergen Festivals. The Van Baerle Trio recorded an album for the Etcetera label featuring trios by Saint-Saëns, Ravel, and Theo Loevendie in 2012; the album gained critical notice in several countries and won an Edison Award. They moved to Challenge Classics in 2015, issuing an album of Mendelssohn piano trios, and 2018 saw the release of their complete cycle of Beethoven's piano trios, in two volumes. Since 2014, the members of the Van Baerle Trio have taught chamber music classes at their alma mater, the Amsterdam Conservatory.
