Trevor Hall
Raised on an island in South Carolina, Trevor Hall developed an affinity for summery acoustic music, from the beachside ambience of Jack Johnson to the leisurely stroll of Bob Marley. After issuing an EP for Geffen Records, The Rascals Have Returned, as a teen in 2006, his song "Other Ways" was included on the soundtrack for Shrek the Third (2007). He continued to blend the sounds of reggae and roots music and the influence of Eastern mysticism on releases like 2011's Billboard 200-charting Everything Everytime Everywhere, 2015's KALA, and 2020's intimate In and Through the Body. A series of collaborations, including "Pacific Coast Highway" with the Hip Abduction and "Hold On" with roots outfit Gone Gone Beyond, appeared in 2022, followed by the studio album Trevor Hall and the Great In-Between in 2023.
Born in Connecticut and raised in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Hall decided on a career in music at a young age and recorded his self-released debut album, 2004's Lace Up Your Shoes, at the age of 16. He soon left South Carolina to attend the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California, where he studied classical guitar. It was there that he was introduced to the practices of yoga and meditation, which would greatly influence his life and his music.
In 2006, the still-teenaged Hall prepared for his major-label debut with Geffen Records. The Rascals Have Returned, an introductory EP produced by John Alagía, featured a soothing mix of reggae, folk, and roots rock. Sales were slow, however, and Geffen parted ways with Hall in 2008. In the meantime, Hall provided a song, "Other Ways," for the Shrek the Third soundtrack. The White Ballon label issued his follow-up, This Is Blue, in 2008.
Hall continued to tour, performing shows alongside the likes of Ben Harper, Matisyahu, and the Wailers. He also returned to the studio to record a self-titled 2009 album emphasizing reggae influences. It marked his debut for Vanguard Records. The live album Chasing the Flame: On the Road with Trevor Hall followed on the label in 2010. Hall's next full-length offering for Vanguard, 2011's Everything Everytime Everywhere, was produced by Jimmy Messer and reached number 80 on the Billboard Top 200. In June 2014, Hall explored spirituality on the poppier Chapter of the Forest, and a year later, he released the stripped-down, intimate five-song EP Unpack Your Memories... followed by the full-length KALA. It was named for the Sanskrit word for "time."
Striking out on his own, Hall crowd-funded his next album and opted to release it independently. Issued in installments that corresponded with specifically chosen lunar cycles, The Fruitful Darkness' first three tracks were released in September 2017, with the completed LP arriving in July 2018. The stand-along song "Put Down What You Are Carrying," featuring Brett Dennen, garnered millions of streams in 2020. That year, Hall and his wife, Emory Hall, created the Where the Rivers Meet Foundation to continue their long-running humanitarian efforts in India and Nepal. Next for Hall was the full-length In and Through the Body, released on 3 Rivers in August 2021. Produced by Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Nathaniel Rateliff), it featured a pair of collaborations with his wife. In 2022, he issued singles including "2 Oceans" (with Marieme) and "Hold On" (with Gone Gone Beyond) as well as being featured on the Hip Abduction song "Pacific Coast Highway." The following year, the entirely self-produced Trevor Hall and the Great In-Between was released on Hall's own 3 Rivers label. Recorded in the barn-turned-studio in his backyard, the sonically and lyrically explorative set touched on themes of parenthood ("Hello My Son"), creativity ("Shake It Out"), and eternal love ("Losing You").
