Toenut
Toenut play a unique brand of rhythmically complex, experimental alternative rock topped off by the unearthly vocals Katie Walters. Atlanta natives Skipper Hartley and Richie Edelson sowed the seeds of the group back in 1991. Toenut recorded their debut single, Heyward/Information, for Half Baked Records in 1993. The track drew the interest of famed indie producer Kramer, who allowed the band to use his Noise New Jersey studio to record a demo. Through Kramer, the group met producer Steve Watson, who would become an important collaborator. Mute Records signed Toenut in 1994. The group's lineup was still in flux, however, particularly in the drummer position. Jeff Sullivan (Drivin' n' Cryin') had played frequently with the group, but Toenut, needing a more steady member, enlisted Colin English, who would become the band's sixth drummer. The demo recorded at Kramer's studio was tweaked and released as the group's debut LP, Information, in 1995. The group's sophomore effort, Two in the Pinata, came out in 1997. That same year, Toenut suffered a tragedy: on April 5, bassist Chris Collins was on his way to a show in Athens, GA, when he was killed in an automobile accident.
