Tetiana Shafran

One of Ukraine's most promising young pianists, Tetiana Shafran has won an unusually large number of prizes at home and abroad. She was signed to the Steinway & Sons label and released her debut album in 2023. Shafran was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union, in 1989. She took up the piano at age three. A student at first of Andriy Vasin, Shafran graduated from the Lysenko Special Music School (now the Kyiv Lysenko State Music Lyceum) and then, in 2012, the Ukrainian National Tchaikovsky Academy of Music (also known as the Kyiv Conservatory). Shafran went on for studies with former Juilliard School professor Oxana Yablonskaya. From 2015 to 2017, she studied in Spain and Israel. A notable feature of Shafran's early career is the large number of prizes she accumulated in international-level piano competitions; she won some 25 prizes in total. These included awards at the Chopin International Competition for Young Pianists in 2001; the 2017 Antonio Napolitano International Piano Competition in Salerno, Italy; the 2019 Concours International de Piano France-Amériques in Paris; and the 2019 Olga Kern International Piano Competition in New Mexico, U.S.A., where she took the top prize. Shafran has performed at major concert halls around Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa. These include the Grand Theater in Shenzhen, China, the Main Hall of the Palau de la Música in Valencia, Spain, and the Felicja Blumental Music Center in Tel Aviv, Israel. During the 2021-2022 season, she appeared with the Durban Philharmonic (KZN Philharmonic) in South Africa and toured the U.S. with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. Shafran has also been heard on radio and television in Ukraine, Israel, Spain, and Italy. Signed to Steinway & Sons, she released her debut album, featuring works by Ravel, Chopin, and Tchaikovsky, in 2023.
