Sophia Huang
Referred to as the ‘Number 1 female voice in Asia,’ Huang Qishan – born on March 23, 1968, in Chongqing, Sichuan, China – had been a professional Mandopop singer for 27 years before finally coming to prominence in 2013 when she appeared on the popular televised talent show I Am A Singer. Her musical career began in 1986 when she joined the Chongqing Private Huahua Dance Troupe and performed on promotional recordings with the New Air Orchestra. After meeting and marrying Taiwanese producer Hui-Yuan (Michael) Tu in 1991, she left the music business and moved to Taiwan. In 1994, she returned to music with a debut album entitled The Man Hiding Behind the Music, which was produced by her husband. Many critics noted the power and range of her four-octave voice, which earned her comparisons to Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Celine Dion. In 1995, she performed the theme song to Taiwanese television series Fenghua Peerless. Huang Qishan divorced her husband in 1996 continued her music career and released several albums including Only You (2000) and Asia’s First Female Voice (2009). Her unique voice caught the attention of critics and helped her to build an audience, although commercial success alluded her. In early 2013, Huang Qishan became a contestant on the televised talent competition show I Am A Singer, and finally became a household name in China. One of the highlights of the soundtrack to the first season of I Am A Singer was her performance of “Cut Love.” She only came in third place on the show but was honored with the Best Chinese Singer Award at the Huading Awards. She released her album Xiao Xia in 2015, which earned her a Best Mandarin Female Singer nomination at the 27th Golden Melody Awards. Huang Qishan also appeared on the televised talent competition shows Mask Singer (2016) and The Chart (2019). In 2019, she released the EP Run Away and the single “Don’t Send Me.”
