Robotaki
Combining dance, funk, disco, and pop on remixes and original tracks, Robotaki is the moniker of Preston Chin, a Montréal producer who also earned a Master's degree in Genetics (and one in Musical Production and Synthesis) at McGill University. Born in Toronto, Chin grew up loving electronic music that ranged from the Chemical Brothers and Moby to the soundtracks of video games such as the Silent Hill and Super Mario series. He began working as Robotaki -- a twist on the term for grilled Japanese food "robatayaki" -- in 2010, and his remixes of K-pop hits earned him a strong online fan base. Official remixes for Daft Punk, the M Machine, DJ Shadow, Kavinsky, and Chilly Gonzales followed, and Chin balanced his music and his studies over the years. He began releasing original material with 2013's Raton Laveur EP, and became more prolific a few years later, delivering the singles "Ghostboy" and "Right Time" for Majestic Casual in 2016, and a trio of songs ("Automaton," "Drunk," and "Monkey Bars") in 2017. The following year saw the release of the Science EP, which featured collaborations with Nevve, SHOR, City Fidelia, Jamie Fine, and Falcxne.
