Nefesh Mountain

A unique New Jersey-based band who combine bluegrass, Celtic, and string band traditions with Jewish folk music, Nefesh Mountain is the project of husband-and-wife combo Eric Lindberg and Doni Zasloff. Beginning with their eponymous 2016 debut, they have recorded three albums including 2021's acclaimed Songs for the Sparrows. The band grew out of Zasloff's previous project, Mama Doni, which celebrated Jewish culture and infused Hebrew and Klezmer music with everything from Latin and reggae to rock. She began a collaboration with Lindberg in 2010, writing songs together that were initially intended for her own band. The two formed a strong creative connection that soon became a romantic one as well. Fusing bluegrass and old-time American music with Hebrew liturgical texts, they formed the basis for a new project which they called Nefesh Mountain. They added touring musicians Tim Kiah (bass) and Alan Grubner (fiddle) and by 2016 had completed their self-titled debut album which featured contributions from instrumental heavyweights like Sam Bush and Mark Schatz. Recorded in Nashville, a second album, Beneath the Open Sky, appeared in 2018. The eclectic set again featured Bush and added legendary dobro player Jerry Douglas and banjoist Tony Trischka into the mix. Nefesh Mountain returned to work in 2021 with their third outing, Songs for the Sparrows.
