Mivos Quartet
The Mivos Quartet is a leading U.S. new music ensemble, collaborating with composers and performers in a wide range of contemporary music styles. The group enjoys working closely with composers over a period of time to develop new music for string quartet.
The Mivos Quartet was established in 2008 in New York, where the members were studying in the school's master's program in contemporary music. The members as of 2023 were violinists Olivia De Prato and Maya Bennardo, violist Victor Lowrie Tafoya, and cellist Tyler J. Borden. The group has collaborated with a constantly growing group of new composers in the commissioning and creation of new works. In 2010, the Mivos Quartet made its album debut on the Tzadik label, issuing a recording of the Quintet for clarinet and strings of Ned Rothenberg with Rothenberg himself on clarinet. That was followed in 2013 by an album on Ex Cathedra featuring the String Quartet No. 2 of Patrick Higgins.
The Mivos Quartet has appeared on prestigious series and at festivals devoted to new music in the U.S. and beyond. These include the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Noon to Midnight new music marathon, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Wien Modern in Austria, and Shanghai New Music Week in China. The group has amassed a long list of composer collaborators that includes Jeffrey Mumford, Michaela Catranis, George Lewis, and Kate Soper. For its work in collaborating in the creation of new music, the quartet received the 2019 Dwight and Ursula Mamlok Prize for Interpreters of Contemporary Music. The group has also worked with creators of multimedia and improvised music, including Rothenberg, jazz vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant, and guitarist-composer Mary Halvorson, the winner of a 2019 MacArthur Fellowship. The quartet has recorded for various labels, including ATMA Classique, Kairos, and Nonesuch, moving to the major Deutsche Grammophon label for a 2023 recording of the string quartets of Steve Reich. By that time, the group's list of album credits extended to more than 25 items.
