Makenzie

A powerful singer who caught her first big break on the 15th season of The Voice, MaKenzie specializes in classic R&B with a stylish modern spin. Initially pursuing a more traditional diva direction after leaving The Voice in 2018 -- she was carrying the torch of Mariah Carey and Kelly Clarkson -- MaKenzie wound up taking a detour into electronic-inflected modern pop that led her to her confident 2024 release A Pretty Fucking Cool EP and its accompanying single "Lips." A native of Wallingford, Kentucky, MaKenzie Thomas first attempted to break into the music biz when she auditioned for Season 14 of The Voice. She failed to earn a single turn of a chair, leading her to spend the next year honing her chops by singing gospel with Elevated Praise. When she returned to The Voice for Season 15, she joined Jennifer Hudson's team, staying with the show through the semifinals. A rendition of the carol "Silent Night" became her first single late in 2018, followed by "Something Beautiful" in 2019. After releasing "Love on the Brain" early in 2020, MaKenzie shed her surname for "Let It Burn," one of four additional singles she released that year; "Naked," "Always Remember Us This Way," and "If I Were Your Woman" all appeared by the end of the year. A cover of the Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love" performed well on streaming in early 2021, but it wasn't included on the Love, MaKenzie album she released at the end of the year. MaKenzie spent 2022 and 2023 quietly, then re-emerged in 2024 with "Maybe," the first of a series of slick singles that found the singer modernizing her pop-R&B with an electronic veneer and a new wave attitude. Those songs -- which included "LIPS" and "Velvet" -- were rounded up on the A Pretty Fucking Cool EP, which also featured "Cashmere," a song that bore a debt to Prince (even though it sounded nothing like his 1993 single "Pink Cashmere").
