Dennis Lau

Electric violinist, pianist, songwriter, and producer Dennis Lau was born in Ipoh, Malaysia on September 9, 1985. He first became interested in music at the age of 3 when, encouraged by his mother, he began learning to play the piano. He also began studying the violin when he was 7. Moving to Kuala Lumpur at the age of 8, he became the youngest Malaysian to reach Grade 8 when he passed the ABRSM graded piano exam at the age of 11. He eventually earned several diplomas in classical piano. In the meantime, he studied violin under Nora Kim and Andrew Chye. Dennis Lau graduated in 2006 from UCSI University with a B.A. in Music. The following year, he began performing at high-profile events while also founding his own company, the Mosaic Entertainment Group, which gave other young musicians the opportunity to perform at similar functions. While commonly referred to as a classical musician, his musical influences - Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Ryan Leslie, Brian McKnight, and John Mayer – inspired his move to classical – pop crossover success. Dennis Lau became the first instrumentalist to be signed to Sony Music Entertainment Malaysia and released his debut album, DiversiFy, in 2009. The following year, he was the opening act in Kuala Lumpur for Adam Lambert’s Asian tour and made an international splash when he performed in London, England at Islamic Fashion Week. Over the next few years, he performed in Australia and earned more attention when performed at Istana Negara during the royal visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton. His album The Malaysian Journey was released in 2014, followed a year later by the international version of the album, simply titled The Journey. In 2016, he organized a large-scale concert event, Dennis Lau & Friends – The Phoenix Rising, which gathered together the largest number of collaborators and instrumentalists in Malaysian history. Highlights from the show were featured on the album The Phoenix Rising Concert. Over the course of his career, Dennis Lau has collaborated with many Asian and international artists including Ning Baizura, Lewis Pragasam, James Boyle, Syafinaz Selamat, Jimmy Sax, Noryn Aziz, Atilia Haron, Janet Lee, Soo Wincci, Jingles, Jamie Wilson, Tat Tong, David Tao, and many others. Dennis Lau has received numerous honors during his career including awards from the McMillan Woods Global Awards (2013), the Asia Pacific CSR Awards (2015), the Selangor Excellence Business Awards (2015), and more.
