Clever
Rising to prominence in 2019, American rapper and singer Josh “Clever” Huie was far from new to the game at the time of his big break. Born on July 8th, 1985 in Gadsden, Alabama, he discovered his love for singing and poetry from an early age, and in his teens became an avid battle rapper and member of local crew Draztik. Sharing his earliest demos in the form of DIY cassettes recorded on a karaoke machine, he boosted his profile in 2006 as a competitor on two BET TV talent shows, 106th and Park and Spring Bling, the latter of which he won. In July 2013, not long after being charged with separate offences for a burglary and the creation of a homemade explosive, he digitally released an eponymous album, which has since been pulled from the internet. The following year, he teamed up with Snoop Dogg and frequent collaborator Fredwreck for “Payday”, which appeared on Snoop’s mixtape That’s My Work 4. Increasingly leaning into the developing melodic rap scene in the following years, Huie soon connected with some of the genre’s most high-profile exports, joining forces with Juice WRLD in March 2019 for the grungy collaboration “Ring Ring”, taken from the late star’s chart-topping final album, Death Race for Love. His next project, Who is Clever?, arrived in October of the same year via Lil Bibby’s Grade A label, billed as his debut album. Having experienced an influx of new fans, Huie was soon asked to lend his vibrato-tinged vocals to a run of high-profile songs in 2020, landing an appearance on Diplo and Julia Michaels’ “Real Life Stuff” as well as a coveted spot alongside Post Malone on Justin Bieber’s US #24 hit “Forever”. After signing a new joint deal between Grade A and Malone’s label, Posty Co, and teaming up with rapper Zero 9:36 and drummer Travis Barker for the rock-leaning collaboration “In My Hands”, he recruited an all-star cast of collaborators including Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and Lil Baby for his second album, Crazy (2021).
