Baran Klaudiusz
Accordionist Klaudiusz Baran has brought his instrument to a new level of prominence in his native Poland. He plays not only tango music, which has a long history in Poland, but also contemporary concert music of various kinds, and he has founded several ensembles that have aided him in realizing his musical vision.
Baran was born in Przemyśl, in southeastern Poland, on January 17, 1971. He attended the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, studying accordion with Jerzy Jurek. Baran then earned a French government scholarship that enabled him to continue his accordion studies at the Conservatoire Paul Dukas in Paris, where his main teacher was Max Bonnay. After graduating, Baran began a long association with the Fryderyk Chopin University, first as head of the Intercollegiate Department of Accordion Studies from 2002 to 2005, then as vice-dean and later dean of the instrumental faculty, as vice-rector for artistic affairs from 2012, and as rector of the university in 2016. He continued to hold that position as of the early 2020s.
Meanwhile, Baran was building a substantial career as both a performer and a recording artist. He began to appear on albums by other artists as early as 1996, and in 2003, the Sony Classical album Astor Piazzolla -- Tango, which he recorded with a Piazzolla-like quintet, became the first tango album to win Poland's Fryderyk Award. Baran has appeared as a soloist or with chamber ensembles in Europe, South America, and Asia. He has been a concerto soloist with most of the top Polish orchestras and with the Dresden Philharmonic in Germany. Baran has founded ensembles of his own: the Tangata Quintet (nominated for two Fryderyk Awards), Machina del Tango, and DesOrient. He has a longstanding passion for tango music but also often programs contemporary works. His solo debut came in 2021 with the album 20th Century Russian Accordion Sonatas on the Dux label. He followed that up in 2022 with Polish Accordion Concertos: Blazewicz, Majkusiak, Przybylski, released on the Naxos label.
