7 Sons of Soul
Merging contemporary urban sensibilities with the traditional gospel quartet sound, 7 Sons of Soul bring a refreshing twist to the gospel genre. The group was formed in Washington, D.C., after singers Cliff Jones and Deonte Gray had completed recording a song, "Run On," in the studio and, pleased with the results, decided to officially assemble a group and complete a whole album. Jones and Gray drafted singer Dave "DaveyBoy" Lindsey along with drummer Paul "Buggy" Edwards, keyboardist Sam Kendrick, and bassist Nathaniel Fields, and 7 Sons of Soul were born. Lindsey ended up producing and writing the bulk of the material recorded, and the eventual result was a 14-track album of gospel, ranging from traditional to modern, and even though the group veered at times to a straight R&B sound, nothing secular in nature was attempted. The finished project was taken to Verity Records, which released it unchanged in 2004 as 7 Sons of Soul. The album went on to reach number 24 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart. The follow-up, Witness, arrived on the Zomba label in 2007 and also hit the gospel chart.
While most individual members kept busy within the music industry, aside from appearing on a few gospel and Christmas compilations and continuing to perform live sporadically (including a 2010 concert at the Kennedy Center with Maggie Ingram & the Ingramettes), nothing new was heard from the group for several years until the song "Run" emerged in 2014. It was followed by the single "High & Mighty" in January 2016 and the promise of an album in the works. By that time, Fields and Kendrick had parted way with 7 Sons of Soul, with Ronnie Lindsey taking over on bass. Other non-original members included Kenneth Epperson, Eric Graham, and Matthew Tucker.
