The Naxos label's ongoing series of releases devoted to the Classical-era composer Paul Wranitzky continues to attract listeners in this, its fifth volume, which even made classical best-seller charts in early 2023. The phenomenon is not so odd when one considers that Wranitzky was admired by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, and conducted the premiere of Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21, and early performance of Haydn's oratorio Die Schöpfung. Wranitzky was popular and prolific, clearly putting more effort into some works than others, but at his best, he was imaginative and had a distinctive voice. An example here is the ballet Das listige Bauernmädchen ("The Crafty Farmer Girl"), composed at some point between 1795 and 1805. The score consists of 22 short pieces, nicely balanced between court elegance and folkish touches; the latter are introduced immediately in the tonalities of the Ouvertura. The ballet is the strongest of the three works on the album (both of which are world premiere recordings); it is followed by a Divertissement, also meant to be danced, written in 1803 for the birthday of Emperor Franz II, and by a quodlibet, an unusual form during the Classical period. Conductor Marek Štilec and the Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Pardubice seem to have warmed to their task as this series has developed, and they deliver performances with a good deal of elegance and charm. Essential for aficionados of the Classical period, this release is pleasant for anyone.
