Treize ans après Endless Wire, l’éminence grise de la formation britannique Pete Townshend et son chanteur Roger Daltrey pactisent à nouveau pour le sobrement intitulé The Who. Du quartet originel, il ne reste qu’eux. Son batteur punk Keith Moon est parti d'une overdose en 1978 et son bassiste, John Entwistle, d'une crise cardiaque en 2002. Si l’alchimie créatrice des Who en studio n'est plus, Townshend a trouvé l'inspiration en écrivant pour Daltrey, avec qui la communication se fait pourtant très rare. Tout a été composé en 2018 et taillé pour sa voix de septuagénaire. 


Des « ballades sombres, du rock heavy, de l’électronica expérimentale et des choses typiques des Who comme des guitares qui font yanga-dang », décrit Townshend. C'est sûr, on retrouve la patte des Who, cette énergie rock éclatante, ses lignes de guitares saillantes et un Daltrey exultant. On verra moins l'apport expérimental. Si Endless Wire comportait Wire & Glass, un mini-opéra comme les Who ont su en faire en version courte (A Quick One) ou longue (Tommy, Quadrophénia), cet ultime opus se concentre sur onze morceaux sans vouloir former un tout. Townshend : « Il n’y a pas de thème, pas de concept, pas d’histoire, juste un ensemble de chansons ». Patchwork vibrant malgré l’âge, The Who, sans atteindre la poésie du zénithal Who’s Next, a le mérite de sceller le génie de Townshend. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz

Personne ne sonne comme Daniel Johnston. Artiste dépressif et méconnu devenu culte grâce à la reconnaissance de ses pairs, l’Américain, mort le 11 septembre 2019 à l’âge de 58 ans, est le symbole d’une musique naïve, lo-fi mais débordant d’émotions. Il n’est pas trop tard pour (re)découvrir cet authentique génie underground qui ne rate jamais le cœur de l’auditeur.
