Deux ans après le plébiscité Who Killed The Zutons?, The Zutons, groupe rock originaire de la pluvieuse Liverpool mais artisan de mélodies ensoleillées, revenait avec ce deuxième opus au titre évocateur, Tired of Hanging Around....
Emmené par les gros singles à succès que sont « Why Won't you Give me Your Love? » et « Valerie », ce disque reprend les choses là où il les avait laissées deux ans plus tôt : un rock à la forme relativement classique, mais à l'énergie considérable et aux mélodies souvent évidentes. Le petit hymne qu'est devenu « Valerie » leur vaudra d'ailleurs une reprise un an plus tard par la sulfureuse Amy Winehouse, qui du coup redonnera un deuxième souffle à ce single... La voix de David McCabe ou le saxophone d'Abi Harding donnent toujours une petite note retro à cette mixture pop rock de bon aloi, et des titres comme « Oh Stacey (Look What You've Done!) », « It's the Little Things We Do » ou encore « Secrets » emmènent l'auditeur dans la grande histoire du rock anglais, entre The Coral, Super Furry Animals et les vieux standards rock british des années 70...
Néanmoins, le disque s'avère moins « évident » (commercialement parlant) que son prédécesseur, et la complexité de certains titres, si elles raviront les aficionados du groupe, risquent de ne pas laisser de traces indélébiles chez l'auditeur lambda, qui aura été séduit par les deux gros singles que sont « Valerie » et « « Why Won't you Give me Your Love? ». A ce titre, Tired of Hanging Around est peut-être -paradoxalement- l'album le moins accessible de The Zutons. Qui a dit que c'était un défaut ?
