De 1920 à 1980, voilà la période que couvre le répertoire de mélodies de Virgil Thomson ! Hélas, cet inclassable et pourtant si génial compositeur états-unien ne fait pas partie de ceux que l’on accepte, en France, dans le giron des Américains fréquentés. Dommage, dommage, car ce bonhomme – qui a vécu à Paris de 1925 à 1940, et qui se fit le champion de Satie des décennies avant que le doux rêveur ne revienne à la mode – a des dizaines de cordes à son arc. Soixante dix-sept mélodies en tout, dont voici l’intégrale ; la plupart chantées en anglais, quelques-unes en espagnol (Tres estampas de niñez de 1957), un bon nombre en français (Trois poèmes de la duchesse de Rohan de 1928, Oraison funèbre de Henriette-Marie de 1930, La Valse grégorienne de 1928 et d’autres, bref, l’époque française)… La richesse de styles et de genres que déploie Thomson tout au cours de sa longue vie – il vécut de 1896 à 1989, quand même !) est stupéfiante. Cette intégrale est donnée par le collectif The Florestan Project, un regroupement de chanteurs basé à Boston et qui se fait fort d’aider à redécouvrir des œuvres quelque peu négligées du répertoire nord-américain. © SM/Qobuz
