It's probable these are not David Benoit's chosen favorites, but picked by a record executive with rights to them. All of the material stems from his recordings for the Mesa/Blue Moon labels from the '80s, before he made his truly breakthrough offerings for GRP. It could be said that this is the more immature, less developed Benoit, a mix of passive funk, smooth pseudo-jazz recordings with him on electric and at times acoustic keyboards. The compositions sway much more toward watered-down commercial instrumental pop instead of the more substantive sessions he would later make interpreting Charlie Brown themes, Bill Evans-influenced music, and his more interesting fusion takes. This is not essential David Benoit, and given the potential choices from the sum total of his recordings, these would not likely be among them.
