In this century, pipes, whistles, accordion, and fiddles of what was once called Celtic traditional music (think Silly Wizard) have mixed with synth rock and insistent rock beats to create a hybrid that bands with ambitious singers and electronics like Skerryvore continue to expand upon. Whether this works depends entirely on your willingness to give yourself over to a mix of mainstream pop attempts at airplay and more traditional and anthemic drinking songs set to metal-like volumes. The eight members of Skerryvore, who clearly have chemistry at any tempo, are clearly built to whip up live audiences. But here they have transferred enough of that energy to the studio to make for an enjoyable collection that swings between thundering instrumentals like "The Beasts of Bone Lake," whistle tunes like "Emergence" that have a Titanic-soundtrack feel, and sweeter adult pop tunes like the opener "Eye of the Storm." While their pop desires are limitless, words sometimes fail this octet, forcing them to resort to lyrical babble—"Our love is like a high/ You and I/ Our love can never die" ("You & I")—or reach for a profundity that's beyond their grasp—"Take me to another world/ Racing through the stars and we'll never let go, yeah/ Take me to another world/ Anything can happen when your dreams unfold" ("Another World"). Alec Dalglish's soaring vocals in the catchy "Everything You Need" prove that he has pop-star potential but Skerryvore is most interesting musically in the five instrumentals where bagpipes become a welcome guest. "Vancouver Island" opens with fast pipes before synths build in, doubling its lines, and vast, crunchy guitars enter. The volume increases via compression before the background drops away leaving an electric guitar solo. Guitars, synths, and pipes return before strings quietly finish the tune. "Gun Fhios" is a slow waltz-like tone poem played on just pipes and keyboards. Closer "The Beasts of Bone Lake" is exactly the kind of fiddle reel, here played on accordion with plenty of keyboard muscle, that in a live setting gradually increases in tempo until everyone within earshot loses inhibitions and is up and performing their own personal Highland Fling. © Robert Baird/Qobuz
