Tracy Chapman, chanteuse éponyme de ce premier album, voit sa notoriété s’étendre internationalement grâce à sa prestation lors du médiatique Nelson Mandela’s 70th Birthday Tribute Concert au Stade Wembley. Sa surprenante interprétation touche le public et enflamme les ventes de cet enregistrement qui sera récompensé trois fois lors des 31èmes Grammy Awards.
« Talkin’ Bout A Revolution » introduit le disque et augure l’âme de cette artiste fervente qui fera retentir ce titre comme un hymne lors de chacun de ses concerts. L’obsédante, sobre et émouvante mélodie de « Fast Car », où elle invite à prendre son destin en main, lui vaudra le Grammy de la meilleure interprétation féminine. Tracy Chapman aborde ensuite tour à tour les thèmes qui lui sont chers : les tensions raciales dans « Across the Lines », la violence conjugale dans « Behind the Wall », le romantisme passionné dans « For My Lover », tandis que « Baby Can I Hold You » est une déclaration d’amour poignante et douce.
Sobriété de l’instrumentation (Tracy, à la guitare, est généralement accompagnée seulement d’une basse et d’une batterie), simplicité de l’harmonie, le style folk tirant parfois sur le rock captive grâce à un swing efficace et au pouvoir évocateur qui se dégage, ou par l’extrême dépouillement, à l’image de « For You ». Seul « Mountains O’Thing » se distingue par l’utilisation de discrètes touches de vibraphone, de flûte de pan et de percussions, ou « She’s Got Her Ticket » par un style aux assonances reggaes.
Sincère, Tracy Chapman n’hésite pas à se mettre à nu comme dans l’étrange titre a capella « Behind the Wall ». Androgyne et singulière, sa voix, au timbre entre raucité et chaleur, dégage une ferveur et une force de caractère. Une certaine fragilité transparaît néanmoins dans ce vibrato nerveux si personnel et caractéristique.
L’ambivalence entre force, espoir, pessimisme ou mélancolie révèle une personnalité complexe. Grammy Awards du meilleur album folk en 1989, Tracy Chapman, avec le recul d’une vingtaine d’année, mériterait bien de se classer parmi ces fameux « albums de légende ».
