A l’origine, ce deuxième album devait s’appeler Folklore, comme pour mettre en lumière la galerie de personnages pittoresques ou hors normes que Stromae évoque dans ses chansons : les « premiers de cordée » de la pandémie (Santé), le fils d’une prostituée fier de sa mère (Fils de joie), ou encore les grands rêves de quatre personnes venant d’horizons sociaux différents (Riez). Un peu à la manière du dessinateur Albert Dubout, Stromae décrit une multitude d’êtres dans un mélange singulier de cocasserie et de sensibilité. L’originalité de sa démarche vient du décalage entre l’ancrage très occidental de ces petites histoires et une musique qui ne cherche qu’à brouiller les pistes grâce au recours sinueux de nombreux instruments traditionnels venus d’Asie (erhu) ou de Roumanie (nai). Sans oublier ce trio de choristes bulgares qui intervient de manière régulière et surprenante dans l’album. Mais dans d’autres cas, ce kaléidoscope musical parvient à se caler de manière logique dans les contradictions de l’âme humaine, lorsque le Belge de 36 ans les dépeint comme un match impitoyable entre deux forces difficilement compatibles (Invaincu, La Solassitude, Mauvaise Journée, Bonne Journée). C’est Stromae lui-même (parfois à travers d’étonnants changements de voix) qui incarne tous les personnages qu’il met en scène. Et lorsqu’il tombe le masque pour parler de ses propres joies et peines, il le fait avec ce même mélange de dérision et de compassion, qu’il s’agisse de ses pensées suicidaires dans L’Enfer ou des joies de la paternité dans C’est que du bonheur.
