Lay It Down n’est sans doute pas un très grand disque, mais il distille des nouvelles tendres et complices d’Al Green, l’un des chanteurs noirs américains les plus étincelants de sa génération (et il n’en reste plus tant que cela), et c’est déjà une bonne chose.
Sans vouloir s’inspirer jusqu’au carbone du travail remarquable effectué dans les années 1970 par le producteur Willie Mitchell aux côtés du chanteur, touché il y a trente ans par la grâce divine, après que sa fiancée l’ait ébouillanté, se soit tirée une balle dans la tête, les hommes aux manettes (et en particulier Ahmir Ouestlove Thompson, l’un des responsables majeurs du son de The Roots), ont tenté de replacer cette fièvre créative et millésimée dans un contexte plus contemporain, et donc dénuée d’essoufflement nostalgique.
Pour ce, il suffisait de penser à donner priorité – au programme du troisième album du Révérend pour un mythique label de jazz) – à la voix comme centre des couleurs, et des interventions. C’est chose faite avec un Green (seul aux commandes, ou en duo avec Anthony Hamilton, ou Corinne Bailey Rae) en pleine capacité de vocalises souples comme une caresse, douces comme une brise de printemps. A noter la participation plus qu’efficiente du guitariste Chalmers « Spanky » Alford (transfuge des Mighty Clouds of Joy, le monsieur est en capacité d’enchaîner un solo jazzy, avec une couleur digne du blues le plus marécageux), et d’Adam Blackstone, bassiste usuel de Jill Scott. On reprochera – un peu chafouin – le caractère uniformément mid-tempo des chansons, toutes sublimes balaldes, en oubliant qu’on a, parfois, besoin d’un peu de douceur.
