Présenté par Renaud Machart, le biographe français de John Adams, comme étant un avatar parfait du genre "docu-opéra", parce qu'il prélève les mythologies éternelles dans l'histoire contemporaine, l'opéra relate le voyage historique du président Richard Nixon en Chine sur un livret d'Alice Goodman, dont les vers qui semblent être "un condensé incantatoire de l'expérience américaine, et son Richard Nixon est le président "Monsieur Tout-le-monde" : banal, pathétique, sentimental, paranoïaque." Lors de la création française en 1990, la presse est partagée entre les contre (C'est le degré zéro de la musique. Une sorte de produit typiquement américain, comme le Coca-Cola) ou dithyrambique (John Adams vu comme "sauveur de la musique contemporaine"). Cet enregistrement dirigé par Edo de Wart a reçu l'aval de John Adams et Peter Sellars, les deux créateurs d'une œuvre devenue classique. FH
