For several reasons, Jacob Druckman shows signs of outlasting the other official academic modernist figures of the third quarter of the 20th century. For one thing, like the people he followed (Copland and Persichetti, to name two), he was a master orchestrator, and he could write music that was sympathetic to vocalists as well. For another, he was not a member of any school; he was not a serialist, but there was no hint of the later New Romanticism in his music, either. Yet again, Druckman followed Stravinsky and several of his American successors in engaging with Baroque music, but his own take was fresh and unusual. All these aspects of his music are shown on this release by the Boston Modern Orchestra Project under conductor Gil Rose, with mezzo-soprano Lucy Shelton in the vocal pieces. The music is thematically linked by the idea of magic and incantation, which links the Baroque transcriptions (pretty much intact, with Druckman primarily revising the instrumentation) to the contemporary works to some extent. It is worth noting that the two Baroque works, Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Médée and Francesco Cavalli's area Delizie contente che L'alme beate, were hardly known outside Baroque-music scholarly circles when Druckman set them. The highlight is the concluding title work, a set of "conjurations" in different languages (including Malay) and literary traditions. Shelton shines in these, giving them the proper theatrical flair. Recommended for devotees of the period.
