Être la seule interprète de trois génériques de la saga James Bond – Goldfinger (1964), Les diamants sont éternels (1971) et Moonraker (1979) – vous colle une étiquette assez réductrice. Shirley Bassey a pourtant réussi à se construire une impressionnante carrière internationale bien au-delà de ses illustres piges pour l’agent 007. Avec plus de 135 millions d’albums vendus, la Galloise à la voix surpuissante fut même l’une des plus grandes stars de la pop des 60's, entre jazz light et easy listening. En 1997, elle fit même un come-back inattendu grâce à Propellerheads, duo vedette de la scène big beat qui l'invita à poser sa voix sur le tubesque single History Repeating… Une vingtaine d’années plus tard, Shirley Bassey rugit toujours avec beaucoup de sincérité. Certes, les années ont légèrement freiné la puissance de son organe mais I Owe It All to You, qu’elle publie à l’automne 2020, reste l’écrin parfait de sa classe innée et une belle lettre d’amour adressée à ses fidèles fans.
À 83 ans passés, Bassey s’attaque à un répertoire éclectique au possible, allant d’Always on My Mind popularisé par Elvis Presley à I Was Here de Beyoncé, en passant par l’adagio d’Albinoni ou Smile, la chanson que Charlie Chaplin composa pour Les Temps modernes. Rivière de violons ou big band jazz à la saveur 60's, au choix, viennent habiller une collection qui lui ressemble, entre standards millésimés et clins d’œil au temps présent.
