Peu importe que Gift of Screws soit considéré comme le quatrième ou le cinquième album de Lindsey Buckingham, il est avant tout son tour de force, passé par mille et une vissiscitudes avant de voir le jour en 2008, après le déjà excellent et acoustique Under the Skin.
La première version de l'album enregistrée entre 1995 et 2001 servira finalement à pallier le manque d'inspiration de ses collègues en fourbissant pas moins de sept compositions à l'album du retour de Fleetwood Mac, Say You Will en 2003. Nullement découragé, l'auteur-compositeur et sous-estimé guitariste remet son ouvrage sur le métier et signe dix nouveaux titres de toute beauté, complétant ainsi un disque dont l'intitulé emprunte un vers à la poétesse Emily Dickinson.
Composé, arrangé et produit en grande partie par son auteur, Gift of Scews comprend trois chansons coécrites par sa femme ou son fils, et accueille incidemment la paire rythmique John McVie et Mick Fleetwood sur « Wait for You » et « The Right Place to Fade ». Au-delà de ces considérations, le recueil abrite tout le savoir-faire d'un guitariste rompu aux techniques du picking (« Time Precious Time ») et d'un artisan féru d'explorations sonores (« Great Day »). Ces qualités, combinées à une grande maturité du texte et un sens habile de la mélodie imparable (« Did You Miss Me »), dessinent les contours d'un classique instantané.
Pour les plus assidus, une version pirate de dix-sept titres a survécu au naufrage initial. Elle comprend les titres achevés pour Say You Will (notamment « Miranda », « Steal Your Heart Away », « Red Rover » et « Murrow ».) ou réutilisés pour Under the Skin.
