Les Talking Heads n'étaient pas un groupe de new wave comme les autres. Croiser les genres, fusionner les continents et faire péter les frontières stylistiques, David Byrne a toujours eu ça dans le sang. Alors qu’ils font les premières parties des Ramones à leurs débuts au milieu des 70's, les Talking Heads (qui réunissent le batteur Chris Frantz, la bassiste Tina Weymouth et le claviériste et guitariste Jerry Harrison) abordent le punk et la new wave de façon hybride. Sur leurs deux premiers albums, Talking Heads: 77 et More Songs About Buildings and Food, leur raideur atypique, qui mêle l’esprit des Sparks, de Jonathan Richman et de David Bowie à la soul et aux instruments venus d’ailleurs (le steel-drum caribéen), en fait l’un des vers les plus étranges rongeant la Grosse Pomme de l’ère punk. Une sorte de bout de caoutchouc arty aux convulsions imprévisibles… Avec son troisième album, produit, comme le précédent, par le visionnaire Brian Eno, la bande de Byrne, ex-étudiant de l'école de design de Rhode Island, fait souffler dans son rock brut une chaleur cosmopolite au possible : ethno (sur le I Zimbra d’ouverture), funky voire discoïde (Life During War Time et Cities) et même country planante (Heaven). Publié durant l’été 1979, Fear of Music confirme surtout que les Talking Heads sont bien plus complexes qu’il n’y paraît, tentant des escapades avant-gardistes dans lesquelles peu osent alors s’aventurer.
