There is no shortage of recordings for Debussy's Etudes and The Children's Corner, among the most popular keyboard works of the 20th century, and there are nearly as many different takes on them as there are pianists who have attempted them. They go together exceptionally well on a single recording, for each one opens by poking fun at academicism in Pour les cinq doigts (Après Carl Czerny) in the Etudes and Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum in The Children's Corner. Pianist Aleck Karis is distinctive in that he sustains the humor over much of the program in both works. The Etudes revel in building material of considerable technical difficulty from unpromisingly simple openings, and listeners may be able to find crisper renditions of some of the more intricate ones, but Karis is on top of the basic tension between the rigid-sounding technical concepts of the Etudes (each one has a title that could indeed have come straight out of Czerny, like "Pour les octaves") and the fact that rigidity is subverted throughout, with humor, whimsy, sentiment in these works that, despite the outbreak of war and the composer's encroaching illness, are among the lightest-spirited Debussy ever wrote. Karis adopts the proper limpid innocence for The Children's Corner, but here, too, there are high spirits, and the final Golliwogg's Cake Walk is an infectious one. As so often happens with the Bridge label, the sound engineering is an integral part of the attraction; it was recorded at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in New York.
