Les critiques se méfient souvent des albums posthumes autant que les fans les affectionnent. Luttant contre un cancer du poumon depuis 1997, George Harrison avait surpris tout le monde à l’été 2001 en annonçant qu’il s’était remis à composer, mettant ainsi fin aux rumeurs qui prétendaient sa santé de plus en plus précaire. Sorti un an après sa mort et produit par son fils Dhani et Jeff Lynne, Brainwashed ne peut qu’être vu comme le point final qu’il voulait apporter à sa carrière avant de voler vers d’autres cieux.
Souvent inégal dans la qualité de ses livraisons solo, George Harrison donne ici le meilleur de lui-même comme au bon vieux temps de All Things Must Pass. A l’heure du bilan (« Looking For My Life »), s’il est bien regret que l’on puisse exprimer, c’est celui d’avoir vu la maladie l’emporter trop vite. Car de la guitare lancinante de « Rising Sun » aux accents jazzy de « Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea », Brainwashed est probablement l’un de ses meilleurs albums, celui d’un homme qui a su trouver la paix intérieure grâce à une foi inébranlable en Krishna qu’il invoque en guise de conclusion.
