En dépit de son jeune âge, 18 ans quand sort cet album, Laura Marling possède un style de chanteuse folk à l'ancienne qui évoque une Joni Mitchell des débuts.
L'album d'excellente facture qu'elle présente vaut autant pour sa voix dotée d'un léger grain rauque que pour l'accompagnement et les arrangements de cordes qui embellissent des morceaux comme « Tap At My Window » ou « The Captain of Our Hourglass ». Alas I Cannot Swim est bien sûr emmené par le hit « Ghosts », morceau emblématique de Laura Marling, mais il contient d'autres chansons fort intéressantes, entre folk et country, tel « My Manic and I » et le grandiose « Night Terror ».
Laura Marling, qui signe paroles et musiques de l'album, fait déjà preuve d'assurance et d'une grande maîtrise dans l'interprétation de ses compositions. Cet album révèle la naissance d'une nouvelle grande voix du folk.
