If Joan Baez or Judy Collins were more country-minded, the results might sound something like the Smith Sisters -- a folk/country/pop duo that isn't nearly as well known as it deserves to be. Virginia siblings Debi Smith (lead vocals, acoustic guitar) and Megan Smith (vocals, electric bass) weren't slick enough to be accepted by country radio in the '80s or '90s, and much of their exposure has been on the folk circuit, where listeners have been quick to notice how Baez-influenced Debi's soprano is. The Smith Sisters are in fine form on this live offering, which was recorded at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA near Washington, DC in 1993. With one foot in folk-pop and the other in country-pop, the charismatic siblings excel on material that ranges from Debi's own songs to Garth Brooks' "A Canary's Song" and Cheryl Wheeler's "Arrow." The siblings' performances were recorded live to two-track, which means that no overdubbing would have been possible -- so what you hear on this honest CD is exactly what listeners heard at the Birchmere in 1993. Arguably the Smith Sisters' most essential album, A Canary's Song is highly recommended to both folk and country enthusiasts.
