Informationen zur Playlist

Als er 1968 entdeckt wurde und seinen nonchalanten Flow auf King Tubbys Dubs legte, war U-Roy die neue Attraktion der jamaikanischen Musik. Mit seinem ersten Hit "Wake the Town" im Jahr 1970 brachte er einen neuen Stil in die Soundsysteme von Kingston, der darin bestand, lokale Hits aufzugreifen und über die Beats und um die Refrains herum zu sprechen... Dies sollte einige Jahre später die Geburt des Rap inspirieren. Seine bemerkenswerteste Arbeit war der "Soul Rebel" der Wailers, den er in "Natty Rebel" umwandelte, was sein bis heute größter Hit werden sollte. U-Roy überarbeitete auch unzählige andere Songs von lokalen Reggae-Stars wie Johnny Clarke, Gregory Isaac, Israel Vibration oder The Paragon. Mit einer Stimme, die in den letzten Jahren auf der Bühne so lebendig geblieben ist wie eh und je, verstarb der Mann mit dem Spitznamen The Originator am 17. Februar 2021 im Alter von 78 Jahren und hinterließ ein unermessliches Vermächtnis, das in dieser Playlist zusammengefasst ist.
