Brand of Sacrifice

Brand of Sacrifice are a brutal technical deathcore band whose members -- from the progressive metal outfit the Afterimage and death metal group Ascariasis -- reside in Toronto and New York City. As an extreme music entity, they are unusual; their raison d'être is based on the cult anime/manga series Berserk. Lead vocalist Kyle Anderson describes their music as "the death metal of anime." Their sonic approach employs elements from hardcore and technical death metal with dual guitars, blastbeat drums, and guttural, filthy vocals. That said, they also utilize elements from outside the confines of extreme music: The Interstice, their 2018 debut EP, included sitar solos, a full choir, horns, harp, lyre, and other early instruments. The group's 2019 full-length, Godhand, made a strong showing on the Heatseeker chart and was followed in 2021 by Lifeblood. The trio was founded in early 2018 by Anderson, guitarist/producer Michael Leo Valeri, and drummer Rob Zalischi, all members of Barrie, Ontario's the Afterimage and Ascariasis (Valeri). The former had been together for nearly a decade. BoS were formed in February 2018 with the desire to deliver uncompromisingly crushing noise in modern death metal/hardcore form, with additional outside influences. Brand of Sacrifice drew their name and M.O. from Kentaro Miura's manga series Berserk. The idea for the project had been steeping in Anderson's mind from the very first time he watched a '90s anime adaptation of Berserk when he was 16. Later, while singing with the Afterimage, he began to notice other themed projects in extreme music including the Halo-centric Shadow of Intent and Veil of Maya's direct references to Attack on Titan, Game of Thrones, and Final Fantasy. The trio recorded a five-song demo for their SoundCloud page (after spending tens of thousands of dollars recording it and receiving little in return, they decided to take a back-to-basics approach). Unique Leader Records heard it and signed Brand of Sacrifice. They issued The Interstice as a 10" vinyl EP. A fan excerpted a section of the song "Eclipse" and combined it with footage from a Pentecostal church service that portrayed people jumping and wriggling around seemingly in sync with the music. It went viral, garnering some five million views; it also added more than 10,000 new fans to the band's mailing list. As a result, before even playing their hometown, BoS received a last-minute invitation to play the Summer Slaughter tour. They performed as a quintet with the addition of the Afterimage's other members -- guitarist Liam Beeson and bassist Dallas Bricker -- and the group simply changed their name and sound wholesale. Given a proper budget by Unique Leader, BoS entered the studio in the early spring of 2019 and emerged with Godhand, produced, mixed, and mastered by Valeri. The set, issued in July, entered the Heatseekers chart at number 20. Two years later, the band issued a follow-up album, Lifeblood.
