Shawn Emanuel
Armed with relentless determination but no industry connections, Shawn Emanuel launched his career using the art of persuasion and, of course, his natural talent as a contemporary R&B singer and songwriter. After he opened for high-profile artists such as Destiny's Child and Kanye West, he issued a pair of singles for EMI in his native U.K., including the charting "U Better Believe It" (2006). This was followed by a lengthy retreat from the commercial music industry and a promised 2020 return.
The son of reggae artist Dixie Peach and a relative of Maxi Priest and Derrick Morgan, Emanuel took an early liking to music, and caught the performing bug while covering Stevie Wonder. During his teens, he cycled through a few groups before he decided to go solo. Within only a few weeks of striking out on his own, he approached Kelly Rowland's camp and convinced them to incorporate him into the Destiny's Child member's European tour. This led to sharing other European stages with the likes of Beyoncé and Destiny's Child, as well as Kanye West, Sugababes, and Missy Elliott.
Emanuel took a similarly enterprising approach in landing a record deal. Signed to the U.K. wing of major-label EMI and matched with songwriter/producer Dan Carey (Kylie Minogue's "Slow," Sia's "Breathe Me"), Emanuel made his recorded debut in 2006 with the singles "Slow It Down" and "U Better Believe It," both of which Emanuel co-wrote. The latter appeared in the U.K.'s Top 40 R&B chart, and EMI distributed a five-track sampler promoting Emanuel's Dream World, but that album didn't materialize. Emanuel stepped back for an extended period, and in 2020 resurfaced with the intention of releasing new music.
