Throwing Muses fans expecting more of the same from frontwoman Kristin Hersh's solo debut, Hips and Makers, were immediately proven incorrect with the release of the LP's advance single, "Your Ghost" -- the song trades the Muses' frenetic, angular guitar rock for beautifully delicate folk, complete with mournful cello and the suitably spectral backing vocals of R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe. Three exclusive B-sides round out this typically handsome 4AD package, most interesting among them a cover of Led Zeppelin's monolithic "When the Levee Breaks." With nothing more than a tambourine to stand in for the immortal John Bonham drumming that is the lifeblood of the Led Zeppelin IV version, Hersh strips the song to its foundations in the blues, connecting Hersh back to its earliest originator, Memphis Minnie -- the first woman to strap on an electric guitar, but certainly not the last.
