Lukas Nelson, der Sideman seines Vaters Willie war, aber auch von Neil Young, vergleicht manchmal den rockigenSound seiner Gruppe Promise of the Real mit dem von The Band. „Sie haben im Laufe ihrer Karriere dermaßen unglaubliche Künstler unterstützt und haben sich gleichzeitig auch auf ihre eigene Musik konzentriert.“ Tatsächlich ist in Out In LA, der ein paar Abstecher einer Jam-Band ankündigt, der Einfluss von Robbie Robertsons Gruppe zu spüren, denn plötzlich gibt es ein Gitarrensolo zu hören, das von Robbie Robertson stammen könnte. Dasselbe passiert mit Margo Price, dem aufgehenden Stern der aktuellen Countrymusic und der zweiten Stimme in Lotta Fun. Dann kommt Sheryl Crow, um in den gleichnamigen Titel einen kleinen Sonnenstrahl zu bringen, und Kesha überrascht uns mit Funk in Save a Little Heartache. Lukas Nelson setzt sich über alle Genregrenzen hinweg und so präsentiert er sowohl Twee-Pop in Bad Case, als auch Boogie-Rock aus den amerikanischen Südstaaten in Something Real, ist sanft wie The Hollies in Where Does Love Go und schreckt auch vor der tropischen Sonne in Stars Made of You nicht zurück. Sogar die Mentoren des Sängers treten auf – Willie mit seiner heißgeliebten Gitarre (Spitzname Trigger) in Mystery, sowie Young am Harmonium mit einer akustischen Version von Turn Off The News (Build A Garden).
