Im Jahre 2017 präsentierte Gregory Porter ein Album, um nicht zu sagen einen Liebesbrief als Hommage an jenen, der für ihn der allergrößte Held ist: Nat King Cole. Dieser außergewöhnliche Musiker und virtuose Pianist war ein überaus feinfühliger Erneuerer, der zwischen reinem Jazz und Easy Listening hin- und herpendelte, und natürlich ein faszinierender Sänger/Crooner mit tiefer, romantischer Velourstimme, die man sofort erkennt. Dieses Genie war selten so gut aufgehoben wie hier. Für dieses in der renommierten Royal Albert Hall aufgezeichnete Live-Album wurde Gregory Porter von seinem treuen Quartett begleitet (dem Pianisten Chip Crawford, dem Bassisten Jahmal Nichols, dem Schlagzeuger Emanuel Harrold und dem Saxofonisten Tivon Pennicott), und insbesondere von den 70 Musikern des London Studio Orchestras unter der Leitung von Vince Mendoza. Er mischt hier Werke, die mit Nat King Cole untrennbar verbunden sind (Mona Lisa, Nature Boy…), mit ein paar eigenen Kompositionen ( Hey Laura, When Love Was King, Don’t Lose Your Steam…). Auf faszinierende Weise kombiniert Gregory Porter von Anfang bis Ende dieses One Night Only seinen Gesang genauso problemlos mit äußerst raffinierten Streichern wie auch mit ungeschliffeneren, groovigen Sequenzen.
