As compilations go, this Mott the Hoople set, in only a single disc, blows away the competition. Columbia has issued two different Mott sets, one single and one double-disc, but neither of them gets the picture quite right despite the fact that they include rarities. The Mojo set captures Ian Hunter's merry raucous band of glammed-out roots rockers at the peak of their popularity. And while it's true that because none of the Atlantic material is here it cannot help but be incomplete, one can argue that it is authoritative because of the inclusion of tracks like "Marionette," "Pearl 'N' Roy," and "Alice," in addition to the hits. Until we get a cross-licensed box set documenting the Atlantic and Columbia material together, this is the pick for punters seeking a good comp.
