In the '90s, a secular Al Green album was a rare thing, as the bulk Green's '80s and '90s work was given over to spreading the gospel. On LOVE IS REALITY, Green returns to the worldly themes of his early career, but this album is no backward glance. The classic Memphis soul sound of Green's '70s albums is almost entirely absent here. In its place is a contemporary R&B sound marked by heavy reverb, electronic rhythm tracks, and layers of synthesizer.
Where earlier recordings focused on Green's voice, these arrangements make the Reverend's legendary pipes just another part of the overall mix. Where you stand on this development depends on your level of reverence for albums like LET'S STAY TOGETHER and I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU. One thing that remains predictably unchanged, however, is Green's glorious vocal ability, and even when he's thrown into a mix filled with children's choirs and electronic keyboards, he's immediately recognizable as one of R&B's finest voices.
